First time mothers that have made the decision to breastfeed their baby are likely to be a little concerned with how well they will do with it. Preparing yourself with plenty of information about breastfeeding will make the first feeding as well as the many that will follow much easier on you. Read on to get some great tips to use to succeed with breastfeeding.

Locate a lactation consultant. These are wonderful people to have on call for when you run into problems. They will be able to help you prepare for breastfeeding your baby before the baby even arrives. Many consultants will even come to your hospital when your baby is born to coach you through your first few feedings. It can really help you gain confidence knowing that you have a professional there helping you.

There are many times that a baby has a difficult time learning how to latch onto the breast for their first feeding. The nurses could suggest that you give up and try feeding your baby formula until you can get it worked out, but that is not the best suggestion for successful breastfeeding. Unless the doctor recommends it for health reasons, do not give your baby formula for the first six weeks. They could end up preferring the taste of the formula over your breast milk and make things worse for you.

If you plan to pump to provide baby with bottles, you will need a very good pump. If you try to pump with a hand pump, you will quickly get discouraged. Opt for an electric double pump to cut the time that you have to spend pumping. Your consultant can help you find the one that works best. Also, check with your insurance provider to learn if they cover the cost of a breast pump. Oftentimes, they will either supply you with one or reimburse you for one that you buy on your own.

Nurse as often as you can in the early days of breastfeeding. The more you nurse, the better your supply of milk will come in. Between feedings, pump your milk even if you are not planning to give baby her first bottle for weeks. Your milk can be put in storage bags and frozen for several months before use. This could help tremendously if or when you go back to work.

Pay attention to your baby’s dirty diapers. You will learn a lot about how much she is eating by the number of wet and dirty diapers she has in a day. Do not be surprised if she does not have a dirty diaper for several days. Breastfed babies can go days without having a bowel movement when they are a couple weeks old.

There are many different positions or holds that you can use during feedings. Learn all of the holds so that you are able to reposition your baby until you find the position that she is most comfortable with.

Breastfeeding not only provides your baby with the best source of food in the early days, but it will also provide you with a bond that will last forever. Enjoy this time; you will never get it back.

Breast milk has absolutely one hundred percent of the nutrients that your baby requires, and best of all, it is completely free! You will never have to make a late night trip to the store to pick it up, and you do not have to worry about bringing bottles, nipples, and formula with you when you travel. Many women, however, do not breastfeed simply because they have encountered myths about breast milk that they believe to be true.

Breast milk, in and of itself, will provide your baby with absolutely all of the vitamins and minerals that she requires. It is a complete source of nutrition for your child, and does not need to be supplemented with any other ingredients. Breast milk is enough for babies! It is highly digestible for babies, more so than formula, and provides them with all the calories they need. Your body will produce enough breast milk for your child, although you may choose to supplement with formula if you want.

Breastfeeding is possible for working mothers. It is not just for stay at home moms! Women who work can purchase a high quality breast pump and manually pump their breast milk at work, saving the milk for the child to drink later from a bottle. This can be a way for other family members to feed the baby, as well. Many employers these days have a special room for nursing mothers to use for privacy. If your employer does not, talk with him or her about possible options.

Some people believe the old myth that babies who are nursed will grow up to be spoiled. This is simply false, short and sweet. There is absolutely no scientific link between breastfeeding and children who are spoiled! Breastfeeding can be an excellent way to bond with your child, and is an experience that many women grow to enjoy.

If you take medication, you will want to discuss breastfeeding with your doctor. Always follow his or her guidance! Some types of medications are compatible with breastfeeding, and others may be dangerous to your child. This applies to medications that you can purchase without a prescription, as well. And don’t forget about caffeine – if you drink coffee, some of the caffeine will enter your milk supply and be transmitted to your child. Keep this in mind!

Breastfeeding offers numerous benefits to your child, and to you, as well! For starters, you will find it easier to shed post-pregnancy pounds if you breastfeed. Because breastfed babies are healthier, you are less likely to miss work because of a sick child, as well. You are also less likely to struggle with postpartum depression. And the savings that you’ll enjoy as a result of breastfeeding cannot be overstated!

Breastfeeding offers numerous benefits to your child. You can feel proud of your choice to provide her with fully natural and complete nutrition! It is easy and much less hassle than heating up and sterilizing bottles and mixing formula, and it’s free, too!

What brand/type of nursing bra and shirts do you prefer when you are outside of home with your baby. A link to a website where I could order the same would be helpful.

I have already ordered a Medela sleep bra and a L’ovedbaby coverup. has anyone used these and what do you think of them?

I’m not picky on brand, I just look for a bra that I can unclip 1-handed. I also suggest bringing in a breast pad when you shop so you can see how flat the bra and pad will lay under your shirt. As for shirts, nothing too thin and patterns at the beginning in case I leak! I’ve tried nursing shirts, but didn’t care for them.

Question by I’m so crafty, I make people: breastfeeding and nursing bras, please help!?
i’m not sure what size nursing bras to order. i want to have a couple when the baby is born and then i’ll have to go from there, but is there a general rule of thumb when it comes to figuring out what size you’ll need? i think i’ve heard to go up one cup size. also, since i have to order online because of my larger size, do you think these 2 will be OK for starting out? i plan on using the medela for night time and the underwire for day. thanks for your answers.

i’ve tried the motherhood bras and i hate them. they don’t support my chest now and i’m the same size as before i got pregnant.

I would just get one for night and one for day. Cheap ones. Then after a few weeks you can go and get the right size. There is no way of knowing what size to get yet. Also, if you can at all, it is best to go braless as much as possible aka. at night. If you keep a bra on all night, with nipples that are tender and sore (and they will be) it is a breeding ground for bacteria, infections, etc. In other words, let them air drY!!

Question by ataloss: Breastfeeding: nursing clothes?
Did anyone not go out and buy a nursing wardrobe especially for breastfeeding? I am not working right now and am planning on breastfeeding when the baby comes (I am due next week); and I really don’t want to spend more money on nursing clothes, especially since most of my feeding will take place at home.
Did you manage to wear regular clothes or maybe more cardigans/tank tops when breastfeeding?
Also, is a breast pump a necessity or is it something that only some women need when breastfeeding?

I do not breastfeed but have seen plenty of moms wear regular clothes (some without bras) and just lift their shirts up to nurse. OR wear a loose fitting dress that kind of crosses over in the front and it’s easy to move a part to nurse. Whatever you are comfortable with.
