Preparing For Your First Born

Preparing for the birth of the first baby in the family can be very overwhelming. What do you need now? What can wait until later down the road? These questions and more will be answered in the article below.

First and foremost, your baby is going to need somewhere to sleep when you bring her home. Bassinets or pack and plays are a great way to keep baby close for the first few months. You will get more bang for your buck if you opt for the pack and play because it can be used as a playpen when the baby is older. You will also be able to easily take it with you when you travel or visit friends and relatives and have somewhere safe for your baby to sleep.

Diapers are another necessity that you will need during the first days. You need to decide if you are going to use cloth or disposable diapers or a combination of both. Even if you are going to go with cloth diapers, you might want to buy a bag or two of disposables for the first couple of weeks. Babies go through a lot of diapers during their first weeks and what they leave in them is not exactly easy to get out of the cloth diapers. Not to mention the fact that you will be tired and recovering from giving birth and will not have the energy to mess around with washing all of those cloth liners.

You will need some skin care products. When buying the products, do not buy the large bottles at first. You do not know what products or brands the baby will be able to use. Some babies have very sensitive skin and can be allergic to some of the products. Make sure that you have rubbing alcohol, peroxide, Vaseline, diaper rash cream and triple antibiotic ointment on hand as well as the lotion and bath soaps.

You are going to find many, many little outfits that you love and want to buy for your little one. Remember that babies do not stay small for very long, so do not go crazy with the newborn size clothes. You will mostly need the bodysuits and sleepers for the first few weeks. Choose for the bodysuits that have long sleeves and have the pockets at the hands that you can use to cover baby’s hands with. This way, you do not have to worry about the mittens and she will not be able to scratch her face.

Swaddle blankets are a must have as well. Many babies do very well with swaddling and love the security that they feel when swaddled. You could opt for the Halo sleep sacks with the swaddle wrap that is removable to save some money in the future. They can be used to swaddle baby’s arms and then used as sleep sacks once baby has outgrown the desire to be swaddled.

Bottles might be something you need if you are not breastfeeding. Buy a few different brands to be sure you find one that baby will happily take. Some babies are picky about the type of nipple and having a variety at hand will help you reduce the aggravation of baby fighting your bottles.
